Definition : A Pronoun is a word used in the place of a Noun.
परिभाषा : संज्ञा के स्थान पर प्रयुक्त होने वाले शब्दों को सर्वनाम कहते हैं।
Example :
Nidhi is a doctor. She is a doctor.
यहाँ पर Nidhi एक Noun शब्द है जबकि She Pronoun शब्द है।
Types of Pronoun

- Personal Pronoun (व्यक्तिवाचक सर्वनाम)
- Possessive Pronoun (अधिकारवाचक सर्वनाम)

1. Personal Pronoun (व्यक्तिवाचक सर्वनाम)
A pronoun used in the place of the name of a person, place, animal or thing is called a Personal Pronoun. These pronouns can be used as the subject as well as the object in a sentence.
व्यक्तिवाचक सर्वनाम किसी व्यक्ति, वस्तु या जानवर के नाम के स्थान पर प्रयोग किए जाते हैं। ये सर्वनाम वाक्य में कर्ता और कर्म की तरह प्रयोग में आते हैं।
Personal Pronoun has three persons. (व्यक्तिवाचक सर्वनाम में तीन पुरूष होते हैं) –

2. Possessive Pronoun (अधिकारवाचक सर्वनाम)
A Pronoun that shows possession or ownership is called a Possessive Pronoun.
जिस सर्वनाम से किसी अधिकार का बोध होता है, उसे अधिकारवाचक सर्वनाम कहते है।

3. Demonstrative Pronoun (संकेतवाचक सर्वनाम)
A Pronoun that points out at something is called a Demonstrative Pronoun. ‘This’, ‘That’, ‘These’ and ‘Those’ are Demonstrative Pronouns.
जिस सर्वनाम का प्रयोग किसी की ओर संकेत करने के लिए किया जाता है, उसे संकेतवाचक सर्वनाम कहते हैं।
- This is used for singular noun which is far.
एकवचन तथा पास के संज्ञा शब्द के लिए this का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
- That is used for singular noun which is far.
एकवचन तथा दूर के संज्ञा शब्द के लिए that का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
- These is used for plural noun which is near.
बहुवचन तथा पास के संज्ञा शब्द के लिए these का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
- Those is used for plural noun which is far.
बहुवचन तथा दूर के संज्ञा शब्द के लिए those का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Example:
- This is my new dress. (एकवचन तथा पास)
- That is the red car. (एकवचन तथा दूर)
- These children are playing. (बहुवचन तथा पास)
- Those are the twinkling stars. (बहुवचन तथा दूर)
- This is my best friend. (एकवचन तथा पास)
4. Emphatic/Reflexive Pronoun (दृढ़तावाचक सर्वनाम)
The pronoun that is used to say something with emphasis, is known as Emphatic Pronoun.
जिस सर्वनाम का प्रयोग किसी बात को दृढ़ता से कहने के लिए किया जाता है, उसे दृढ़तावाचक सर्वनाम कहते है।
Example:
- I myself solved this question.
- He himself told me this.
- The children themselves cooked rice.
- You yourself admitted your fault.
- She bought herself a saree.

5. Relative Pronoun (संबंधवाचक सर्वनाम)
Relative pronouns connect a noun to a group of words that follow and describe a noun.
सम्बन्ध वाचक सर्वनाम संज्ञा को एक वाक्य समूह से जोड़ता है, जो उस संज्ञा के बारे में कुछ जानकारी देता है।
Relative Pronoun – Who, When, Which, Whose, That
- Who :
Who is used for human beings as subject form.
(who का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों के लिए कर्ता के स्थान पर किया जाता है।)
Example:
The girl who is dancing is my friend.
I met a boy who was playing cricket.
- Whom :
Whom is used for human beings as object form.
(whom का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों के लिए कर्म के स्थान पर किया जाता है।)
Example :
The man whom you helped is my uncle.
The gardener whom you awarded is very hard working.
- Which :
Which is used for things and animals as both subject and object form.
Which का प्रयोग वस्तुओं तथा जानवरों के लिए कर्ता तथा कर्म के रूप में किया जाता है।
Example :
The cat which is white in colour is mine.
I like the dress which you gave me.
- Whose :
Whose is used for people and animals as possessive form.
(whose का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों तथा जानवरों के लिए सम्बन्ध के रूप में किया जाता है।)

- That :
That refers to people, animals and things in subject and object form.
(that का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों, जानवरों तथा वस्तुओं के लिए कर्ता तथा कर्म के रूप में किया जाता है।)

6. Interrogative Pronoun (प्रश्नवाचक सर्वनाम)
A pronoun that asks questions is called an Interrogative Pronoun.
जिस सर्वनाम के द्वारा प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं, उन्हें प्रश्नवाचक सर्वनाम कहते हैं।
